National Minimum Wage Rise- Is your company prepared?

It’s that time of the year again when the National Minimum Wage rates increase. As of October 1 2015 the National Minimum Wage will increase as follows:

- Adult rate for anyone over the age of 21 will increase by 20p to £6.70 per hour 

- For 18 – 20 year olds the rate will increase by 17p to £5.30 per hour

- The hourly rate for 16 – 17 year olds will be increasing by 8p to £3.87 per hour

- The apprentice rate will increase by 57p to £3.30 per hour

- Accommodation offset increases from £5.08 to £5.35

It is the duty of the employer to recognise this change and amend employee salaries accordingly.

Back to uni? Why not consider temp work?

Back to uni can be a stressful time for freshers and returning students alike. After a four month break without a library in sight, the to-do list can be overwhelming: there’s finding a new flat, enrolling for classes, buying course books and ensuring that you don’t sleep in for that first 9am of term. But what about finding a job?  With all the essays, extracurricular activities and regular trips to the student union bar, finding a part-time job can easily become the last thing on a student’s mind.

That said, with tuition fees for some now costing up to a sweet £9,000 per year plus the additional costs of living expenses and required course books, not working whilst studying has become a luxury that very few students can afford.

The problem for students is that their workload varies throughout the term; so while that weekend bar job may be ideal during Freshers Week when academic commitments are low, the 4am finish on a Saturday morning might begin to lose its appeal come mid-term when a deadline looms first thing on the Monday morning.

If committing to a permanent job is an unrealistic expectation for you during term time or university holidays, temp work might be the ideal alternative.

Flexibility is the main advantage for students of being a temporary worker. Jobs For The Future

In our ever-changing labour market, various job trends come and go and subsequently, the demand for various skills and qualifications is also changing.

Polarization of the UK labour market, fuelled by the recession in 2008, has played a large role in encouraging these changes, with jobs at both the bottom and top end of the market growing, while jobs in the middle ground began to decline, providing the UK with an ‘hourglass’ labour market. In general, the market experienced demand in low-paid, low skilled jobs and high-paid, high-skilled jobs, with routine work being significantly affected by polarization. So the question is – which specific jobs are now in high demand and how should we be building our skill sets?

In the interest of revitalising the economy, areas of growth are found mostly to be within non-routine work, whereas around a decade ago, routine work held a steady position. However with new technologies becoming the most appealing candidates for routine work, many positions have now become obsolete.

With professional and managerial jobs on the rise, titles such as, ‘marketing manager’, ‘finance manager’ or ‘sales manager’ are amongst the most desirable positions in the UK labour market today. Other popular areas such as product management, IT, software and law also rank highly.

In terms of career opportunities, these sectors are particularly desirable to students and more specifically, graduates, therefore it is no surprise that courses in these areas are among the most popular in the UK. Most UK universities now have dedicated business schools, specialising in various subjects, such as Marketing, Finance, Economics, Human Resources and Management. According to Business Insider, business students also have the advantage, as these industries are currently recruiting the most graduates in the UK.

According to recruiting experts there is an increasing demand for candidates with skills within the marketing profession, specifically digital skills,as the economy begins to restore itself. They also found that business skills in other areas, such as finance are in high demand, as the private sector continues to grow. In the interest of an economic upturn, experts also predict an increasing demand for professionals in Human Resources, qualified to employ the right candidates for the right positions.

With consideration for the decline in routine jobs, it would seem that managerial roles are quickly becoming the most desirable roles, with business-related degrees providing widespread advantages in the current labour market. And according to the Scottish Government, creative industries are amongst the country’s growth sectors, therefore providing a ‘comparative advantage’.

Estimator – Glasgow

Primestaff Technical are looking for an Estimator to join our clients busy estimating department and assist with their widespread tendering activities across the group. Our client works in various different construction sectors including housing, commercial and education.

The key role carries with it full responsibility for handling tender opportunities throughout the estimating cycle. You will be reporting directly to the Estimating Manager and liaise with all other functional departments within the organisation for input and support, as well as assisting other less experienced members and supporting their development.

Prime Commercial staff are working exclusively with one of our clients on a brand new position of HR Advisor within their Glasgow office.

This is a terrific opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced HR professional looking for a challenging and rewarding role in a fast-growing career field.

As a brand new role, you will be in an enviable position to make this role your own, and with plenty of opportunities for variety and career progression, you’ll certainly never be standing still.

Although this is a brand new role, what exactly is involved? Well, as part of the HR department, you will have a crucial role to the running of our client’s company, and you will be responsible for day-to-day employee relations in the business, including offering support and advice.

This is a diverse and challenging job, which will include assisting the Group HR Manager with all HR issues, managing full recruitment and selection process, and producing and issuing all HR documentation.

You will also be expected to provide advice to managers on employee relation issues, and handle any employee issues such as absenteeism, misconduct, performance and grievance procedures.

Other duties will include implementing HR practices and policies, ensuring administration processes are being adhered to, producing regular reports, organising, coordinating and conducting new starter inductions, and ensuring all salary and payroll changes are communicated.

The successful candidate will have experience in Learning and Development, as you will be supporting the Learning and Development department to help coordinate any local training needs.

To be successful for this role, you will also need to have your CIPD qualification, which is a certification for those working in the HR industry.

Travel to other offices will be fairly regular, therefore only candidates who can commit to this should apply.
