Leanne Downs has been with us since January 2013. Here she gives an honest account of her time at the company, five years and four promotions later.
Explain your career to date…
My career progression has been unbelievable. During my time here, I’ve had four promotions. I have over 10 years experience within the recruitment industry and my first 4-5 years were in trainee or business support roles. I only became a consultant two years prior to starting here so to come to a company and progress that quickly is an amazing feeling.
I started here back in January 2013 as an Industrial Recruitment Consultant for our Leeds office, predominately managing two large accounts. After a few months of on-site presence and adding value services, these accounts took less time to manage providing me with the opportunity to become more involved with the day to day running of the branch, plus time for other clients.
Within six months, I was promoted to Senior Consultant. As part of this, I solely managed the Leeds Industrial desk for six months and for me this was a turning point in my career. The desk solely relied on me and with this, I felt I grew and developed further. I had the opportunity to implement new procedures, processes and added value services. As long as everything was compliant and time/cost efficient for the business, I had free rein to come up with some ‘outside the box’ ideas for added value services. Six months running a 50+ desk on your own in this industry can be hard but looking back, all those stressful days were worth it. I developed more, became more knowledgeable on compliance and employment law.
In September 2015 I was promoted to Branch Manager in Scunthorpe after being acknowledged for my focus around client service delivery. I became responsible for drawing up tailored value services dependant on client requirements and after spending 6-7 weeks in the Scunthorpe office, I was asked to consider applying for the Branch Manager position. Seeing an opportunity to progress in my career, I applied had an interview and I was offered the position.
By 2017, I had become the Service Delivery Manager overseeing the Industrial division across both Leeds and Scunthorpe.
What have you enjoyed the most?
Progression – I have been given the opportunity to progress within my career and recognised me for the skills in servicing and compliance. I’ve worked for other agencies before and had little progression at the first three companies.
What training have you experienced here?
I’ve attended quite a few courses and it’s given me more confidence. I lacked confidence in sales and live sales training we have had before really helped as I listened back to the calls – and I aren’t as bad as I thought! The management course also had a big impact on me as I had to create and deliver my first ever presentation. I have never been great at speaking or reading out loud but I got some really great feedback and I felt loads more confident in myself and within the role thereafter.
What tip would you give to someone starting out in recruitment?
Multi-tasking goes a long way, organisation, people skills, customer service and being able to think on your feet. Going the extra mile goes a long way in this industry, you definitely have to put in to get something out of it.
